Joho: I’ll be link between Raila presidency and Mombasa people

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho says he will work towards ensuring Mombasa residents reap fruits of supporting presidential candidate Raila Odinga if opposition takes over government in August.

Joho popularly referred to by his supporters as Governor 001
said no one among current politicians in Mombasa can successfully champion the interests of Coast people more than him.

He said politicians vying for elective seats through Jubilee Party in Mombasa should explain their successes to locals before seeking residents’ mandate to lead.

He was speaking in Mombasa in company of MPs Rashid Bedzimba and woman representative Mishi Mboko while on a campaign trail on Sunday evening.

The county chief has been branded ‘Sultan’ by his supporters because of his relentlessness in championing the rights of the people of Mombasa and in extension Coast region.

“I will be the link between you and the NASA government,” he said while addressing a well-attended meeting at Treasury Square, Mombasa.

“Vote for NASA. That’s the only government that can truly transform your lives.”

Joho is an ardent supporter of opposition and NASA leader Raila Odinga.

He is the opposition’s point man in Coast and is expected to marshal support for Raila ahead of the August election.

He has also been instrumental in keeping the Jubilee administration on its toes by pointing out corruption cases especially the alleged loss of Sh100 billion in the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR project.

The Jubilee Party recently dished out nomination certificates to a bandwagon of politicians in Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River and Taita Taveta counties to challenge aspirants fielded by NASA.

Joho says the Jubilee aspirants are too unpopular to wrestle those vying on opposition tickets.

Among those fielded by Jubilee include governor contenders Salim Mvurya (Kwale), Suleiman Shahbal (Mombasa), Hussein Dado and Gideon Mungaro (Kilifi).

Prepare for resounding defeat, MP told

Mavoko Parliamentary seat hopeful Jacqueline Mutindi has asked incumbent Patrick Makau to brace up for a resounding defeat on August 8
.
Mutindi, contesting as an independent candidate says that she has the numbers to beat Makau.
Addressing supporters at Mlolongo on Monday, the MP hopeful said that she has the support of women and youth, adding that Makau should start packing.
Ms Mutindi hit out at Makau claiming that he has not pushed for locals interests in terms of development in The National Assembly.
She claimed that Makau has not fully utilized the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
“Makau should prepare to go home because he will not survive the political wave that is coming on August
 8
,” she said as quoted by the Star.
The MP hopeful at the same time refuted claims that she is a spoiler in the parliamentary race.
“I am not anyone’s political project as being claimed by my rivals,” she said. Makau is seeking another term on Wiper Party ticket and has exuded confidence in retaining the seat.
Former Kibwezi MP Kalembe Ndile is also in the Mavoko parliamentary race vying on Jubilee Party ticket. Others in the race to oust Makau are Justina Wamae of Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) Party and Dominic Maitha contesting on ODM party.

Vocal ODM MP reveals why she won’t defend seat

Kilifi Women Representative Aisha Jumwa could only be days away from being declared the newly-elected Malindi constituency MP after deciding not to defend her seat.

The self-declared ODM commander-in-chief in Malindi who trounced the incumbent, MP William Mtengo, during the ODM nominations is now in full control of the crowded race, thanks to the Orange party's dominance in the county.

According to the fiery Jumwa, her decision to leave the Women Rep seat for the constituency position was motivated by her desire to battle it out with men; a move she says will give her a different experience and platform to serve the people.

"I came to Malindi in order to compete against men and women alike and change the mentality that the constituency seat is a preserve of men among the Mijikenda," Jumwa told Kwachocha residents as quoted by the Nation.

She added that her move not to defend her seat was aimed at nurturing other women into political leadership.

Already, Kibarani Ward MCA Gertrude Mbeyu is in line to replace her after she clinched the ODM party ticket during the nominations.

As to whether Jumwa will beat the six men in the race to clinch the Malindi MP seat remains to be seen.

However, for Mtengo, a win for Jumwa will make him make join the history books as one of the shortest serving MPs in Kenya.

Raila 'gains' as Jubilee 'lose' in DP Ruto's backyard

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto may experience a drop in at least more than
 2
,500 votes in the August polls after Mau forest IDPs threatened not to vote for Jubilee due to being left out in the resettlement process.
The IDPs led by their chairman Robert Mutai said they were left out of the July compensation list announced by DP Ruto, this coming on the back of

“Ruto has been laying the blame of forceful eviction on NASA leader Raila Odinga but we have proven he is worse than Raila,” Mutai said on Tuesday.
Mutai said families living in Kipkongor, Kurpanyat, Kipkoris, Kipkongor, Saina and Kiletien camps lost their property when they were forcefully evicted by Kenya Forest Officers.
“It is unfortunate that we have lost children, old people and pregnant women to cold-related diseases for almost a decade yet the government ignores us saying we are not genuine,” he added.
Mutai threw the blame on their delayed compensation to DP Ruto, whom he termed as the reason behind their unfortunate state.
“He used to be a sweet talker but we are dying under his watch. He has ensured all Jubilee leaders from the region don’t talk about us. We have
proof that he punishes those who dare to mention IDPs," said Mutai.
“We will not vote them. It is better for us to vote for Raila so we can come to a bargain with the help of Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto," added.

Police warn against NASA youth deployment at polling stations

Police in Mombasa will not allow the deployment of youth in polling station to protect votes as proposed by the opposition National Super Alliance.

NASA is in the process of recruiting youth to be deployed in every polling station on Election Day to protect NASA votes from being stolen, opposition leader Raila Odinga says.

Mombasa Deputy County Commissioner Salim Mahmud said the deployment is unlawful and anyone who will offer him or herself for deployment will be arrested and prosecuted.

“IEBC regulations are clear on who is supposed to be at a polling station during elections,” he said at a press briefing in his office on Tuesday.

“If you are not a security officer, an IEBC official or an observer your work will be to line up, cast your vote and return home and wait for the results.”

NASA announced last week the opposition coalition was seeking Sh200 million that will be spent in paying youth who will volunteer to stay at polling stations “guarding” Raila’s votes.

“Every polling station will have at least five youth deployed to guard our votes,” Raila said in Bungoma during his last tour of Western region.

“We will not take chances. We will not allow what happened in 200
7 and 2013
 to repeat.”

The opposition leader maintains he won the 200
7 and 2013
general elections but was rigged out in favour of President Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta respectively.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery on Monday said NASA intends to cause chaos by deploying youth in polling stations.

The former Kajiado Central MP said the deployment will not be allowed.

Salim warned youth said to be planning to cause mayhem on Election Day in Mombasa saying the long arm of the law will not spare them.

“We are aware of criminal gangs operating here (Mombasa). If you are a member please surrender before we come for you,” he said.
